Many English language learners also need assistive and adaptive devices for educational purposes. Share with your colleagues ONE online resource that is supportive of both kinds of learner needs.
I have found one site that does have some links to assist not only people with disabilities but language learners as well. Some links on the site offer free software but some still charge. Links consist of software and plug-ins such as: text-to-speech, flash card, and talking dictionaries. One criticism I have of this site is that their is no rating or opinions on the software or plug-ins that are offered.
Interesting Things for ESL Students http://www.manythings.org/ A fun site for students learning English as a second language. This site has games, videos, English MP3 files, etc.
There are numerous Assistive and Adaptive devices and/or technologies that I found on my search. Because most sites recommend you buy the devices or charge for the download, the site I highly recommend not only for AAT but ELL as well is: http://www.readthewords.com/ And, did I mention it is absolutely "free".
This website has a lot of things available to both learner and teacher. There are interactive online games as well as printable worksheets for classroom uses. The work is also divided into three different levels of difficulty: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.
Assistive/ Adaptive technology is a very important aspect for students with disabilities. Technologies help them become more independent and gives them a sense of hope in having a better self esteem. Here is a great site which offers information on different assistive technologies for various disabilities.CHeck it out!!
There is a sea teeming with sites that offer information, resources, and assistance with AAT in the classroom. I felt overwhelmed especially since my experience in this area is very limited. While browsing, I came upon two sites related to reading assistance. One offered products and services for reading and writing, and the other, a college site, offered information on reading devices, guidelines for selecting the programs and devices, and the use of this technology in reading classes for esl and mildly disabled students. I found the guidelines information helpful. After looking at these sites, I realized that I had a better idea of what these reading devices are and how they can be utilized.
Hey class. I just thought I'd share this interesting site I found for esl learning. This site is applicable to both the teacher and the student. There are many things to do for everyone. Have fun! http://www.eslpartyland.com/
Here's a website that caters to the Assistive/Adaptive technology tools. It offers a lot of http://homepages.luc.edu/~hweiman/p20tech.htmlinformation and help on that area.
This site speaks of how challenging it is to identify LD students who are also ELL (English Language Learner). The article discusses the many factors to consider when trying to identify a learning disability in an ELL. One example would be that some countries do not recognize LD students and some other countries may recognize them but will not offer any special services. Towards the end of the website it mentions some assistive technology devices such as reading pens, talking calculators, closed caption, hand held tranlators, and casette recorders can help ELL students who are also LD.
